YOUTH VERSUS AGE.

AGE WINS IN THIS CASE. CLAIM FOR WAGES. "PREPOSTEROUS" SAYS MAGISTRATE. ; A case which came before the Papalaira Court on Wednesday must be something of a record for youth suing age. The case concerned a Maori boy of 14 years of age whose occupation was put down as that of a labourer. The boy sued a merchant of Auckland for £4 15s wages alleged to be due to him at 5s per day for 19 days. The boy's father, and a witness, another Maori, were engaged on a fencing job for defendant and in evidence they declared the boy was authorised to work at the above wage for 10 days with them by defendant's manager. The manager emphatically denied employing the boy and said the boy did not work at all. The magistrate, Mr F. R. Levien, described the case as preposterous, especially as the boy was a mere child who admitted he bad only passed the first standard. Judgment was given for defendant with costs totalling £2 ss.
