ANNUAL PICNIC.
TO BUCKLAND’S BEACH. ST. JOHN’S PRESBYTERIAN The second annual picnic since the war in connection with St. John’s Sunday School, Papatoetoe, was held on Saturday, February 19, at Buckland’s Beach. Fine weather contributed not a little to the success of the outing, and all interested "n the church movement attended. Children were conveyed to this popular resort in motor cars and buses, leaving the school at 9.45 a.m. and reaching the beach after an hour’s run. Under the able management of the secretary, Mr. E. Ross, the sports events were run off in good time, the children tr-king great interest in the various events. After lunch a number of the swimming- enthusiasts spent a happy time in the water, which was comparatively calm, except for small waves caused by a southerly wind. During the afternooen a few' remaining races were run. Shortly after tea it was time to start for home, and a tired hut happy crowd they were when they returned well satisfied with the day’s arrangements. Some idea of the popularity of Buckland’s Beach may be gathered by those who have not been there from the fact that on Saturday there were from 1500 to 2000 holiday makers sporting themselves on the beach or in the waters, or playing games on the adjoining land. One mishap occurred when the steamer Wakatere, carrying a picnic party, was berthing. A swift inward current rendered the task difficult, and she was carried against the pier with such force as to break one of the piles and do a small amount of other damage. Fortuntely she was scarcely scratched herself.
