WAKARI DEPUTATION

Sir, —At the last meeting of tlie City Council, a deputation waited on the council in connection with transport m Wakari. This deputation is supposed to have had the support of over 600 residents who signed a petition. The value of the petition is doubtful, as many residents assumed that the petition was under the auspices of the Wakari-Kaikorai Improvement Society. I< iirther, no public meeting was called to get something concrete as to the wishes of the residents. Some of the members of the deputation were present at the society’s last meeting, and heard the report of the society’s Transport Committee. It seems strange that they proceeded as they did. The Transport Committee has put in many hours with the city transport authorities, and on this occasion were determined not to rest until the transport service was satisfactory to the district. Residents should know that a unanimous vote of confidence in the society’s committee was passed at that meeting; in fact, residents should be more fully appreciative of the work of the society generally in this matter over the last few years. If the gentlemen who organised the deputation had made a point of more frequent attendance at the' meetings of the society, they would have been familiar with the. whole matter. The society is organised for the benefit of the district, and is open to all, but, as is all too frequent these days, is run by a hard-worked few. If the gentlemen concerned will get behind the society and apply the same energy to the general welfare of the district that they have applied to this transport matter, then they will have the support of the whole - community.—l am, etc,, E. F, Ashby. August 19.
