DATES FOR TOUR BY AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES FIXED BY OTAGO CENTRE

The tentative dates for the tour by the Australian athletes, G. Campbell and R. Elvy, were fixed at the monthly meeting of the Otago Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. last night, over by !Mr C7y W. Clark. They were December 20, Wellington ; December 26, Roxburgh; December 27, Queenstown; January 1, Alexandra; January 3, Balclutha; January 7, Invercargill ; January 10, Dunedin; January 14, Waimate; January 17, Canterbury. It was stated that the principal objects of the tour were to foster inter.est in athletics and to give W. H. Nelson an opportunity to prove his ability for inclusion in the New Zealand Olympic team. It was proposed that Nelson should run in the one and three-mile events, which would, be - competed against G. Campbell on January 10 and 14 at Dunedin and Waimate. < MARATHON COURSE. j The Caversham Harrier Club submitted a motion which proposed to transfer the modified marathon from the city area back to Mosgiel. In support of the motion it was stated that the city area was dangerous because of the traffic. Slower competitors did not like to be in the public eye, and a race over a tar-sealed road all the way was undesirable. Mr A. Beasley said that he much preferred running on a smooth pad to the variety found in the Taieri, and the danger from traffic was negligible, the Port Chalmers-Dunedin and One-hunga-Auckland road races being run over much busier areas. (Mr A. R. Geddes said that it would'be possible to fire a cannon-ball down Cargill road on Saturday without endangering traffic. After further discussion the motion was jiut to the meeting and lost. AUCKLAND VISIT. It was decided that Messrs J. G. Barnes and C. W. Clark select the Otago cross-country team which is to visit Auckland, and Mr R. H. Carrol be the manager. Mr W. H. Nelson suggested that members of the team be allowed to board separately while in Auckland if they wished, as this would cut -down their personal expenses considerably. A manager was also superfluous, he added, as senior members of the team could act in this capacity. The matter was held over for consideration. GENERAL. Mr T. Allen, of the physical welfare branch of the Internal Affaire Depart-

ment, advised 1 that in ■ August eight films of interest to athletes would b® screened. An amendment to the rules was. carried on the motion of the University Club, represented by Mr Beasley. Tha original rule was intended to prevent “ pirating ” of club members, lie said, and the new rule would have the same effect, but allow members to. transfer to another club if they had’not represented the club during the season and the anproval of the centre was obtained. The Otago Centre nominated Mr J. W. ■ Holley, now of Wellington, and formerly of Dunedin, for the position of manager of the Olvnitiic Gaines team. The town clerk, Mr R; AvvJohnston, wrote requesting delegates from the centre to meet Cr Jollv. the superintendent of reserves, and himself to discuss the tenancy of the Caledonian Ground. Messrs Clark and Barnes were appointed the delegates.
