THAWS PROHIBIT WEEK-END SKATING IN CENTRAL
There is no possibility of skating taking place anywhere in Central Otago this week-end, unless there are extremely hard frosts for the next two nights. In all districts of Central Otago there have been thaws during the past week, and although there is still a little ice at Oturehua, •ltanfurly, and Alexandra, it is not suitable for skating. The New Zealand skating championships, which were to have been held at Oturehua, and the bonspeil at Naseby, will take place as soon as the conditions are .favourable.
Although skating took, place at Ranfurly on Monday, it has not been possible siiice then, because of the big thaiv which began on Tuesday, and continued; until to-day. Only 4deg. of frost was recorded at Ranfurly this morning, and the day was mild, with a-warm north-westerly wind. There was no frost at -Alexandra last night, the temperature being ldeg. above freezing point, although 7deg. was registered yesterday, the ‘ Star ’ was told -in a ’telephone conversation to-day.
