DISAPPOINTING RESPONSE TO APPEAL FOR WORLD RELIEF SUPPLIES
NEW YORK, July 15. The United Nations Secretarygeneral, M. Trygve Lie, to-day reported that an extremely serious situation existed as a result of the disappointing response to the United Nations plan for providing post-Unrra relief on a voluntary basis. M. Lie’s report said that the contributions promised to date would not meet more than 60 per cent, of the world’s urgent relief needs. Only six nations—Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, and the United States—had offered cash contributions, find Greece had agreed to contribute dried currants for Rumanian children. Russia and 37 other nations had hot replied, but Afghanistan, Bolivia, Ecuador, Franee, Guatemala. Haiti,_ Luxembourg, the, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Yugoslavia had all said they were unable to assist.
