MR MARSHALL URGES AMERICA TO ADMIT 400,000 IMMIGRANTS
(llec. 11.45 a.m.) ‘ WASHINGTON, July 16. Speaking before the House Immigration Sub-committee, the Secretary of State, Mr George Marshall, to-day urged Congress .to take immediate action to admit 400,000 displaced Europeans to the United States over a period of four years. Mr Marshall said: “ The. United States is in a better position than any other nation to receive a large quota of refugees. If we admit a substantial number of these people as immigrants ; then, with what others are'already doing and will do, we can actually bring an end to this tragic situation.” Mr Marshall, who was first of several high Government officials to testify in favour of legislation that would admit displaced persons, added: “ In so doing we will also confirm our moral leadership and demonstrate that we are not retreating behind the Atlantic Ocean.” Republican leaders say there is little chance of Congress approving such legislation during the present session.
