GUERRILLAS MASSING AT SIX POINTS ON GREEK BORDERS

Greek military sources have reported that the guerrillas are massing at six points near the Greek frontier, three in Albania and three in Yugoslavia, says Reuter’s correspondent at Athens; The Minister of Public Security, General Zervas, reaffirmed that the guerrillas who attacked Konitza came from Albania. It is officially reported from Epirus that two Greek brigades, , supported from the air, engaged the invaders nt three points, inflicting losses and putting them to flight. , ALLEGATION OF BRITISH* AMERICAN PARTICIPATION (Rec. 11.15 a.m.) LONDON. July 16. The • Greek' guerrilla commander, Markos, in a’ statement alleging that British and Americans were assisting Greek Government forces against the guerrillas, named the British Major Peter Stoff in connection with an incident on November 27, 1946, says the British United Press Belgrade correspondent. Markos added that Britons had been implicated in incidents on November 13, 1946, December 19, 1946, and May 22. 1947; that the British Embassy attache assisted the commander of the Greek Ninth Division, Geheral
Katrillo, in operations against the “ democratic army ”, at Larissa on June 10, 1947; that British and American officers took part in military operations at Larissa on June 12, 1947; that British and American aeroplanes fleiv over the combat area at Agrapha on June 13, 1947 ; and that two English and one American officers who arnypd at Hadji on June 14, 1947, operated in contact with a major of the Greek Government’s forces. It is emphasised.in London, says Reuter, that no British troops. of any kind had taken an active part in fighting against the guerrillas. AMERICA WANTS TO SEE STABILITY RESTORED (Rec. 11 a.m.) ATHENS. July 16. Mr Dwight P. Griswold, leader of the American mission to Greece, expressed the hope that the United Nations would eventually take over *the responsibilities the United States had accepted in Greece. He Said the 'United States wished to see stability restored as speedily as possible, so that Greece could be, left unmolested and free to develop her resources as an independent nation. The United States could help, but even a greater responsibility rested on the Greek people. VRONTAL ATTACK LAUNCHED (Rec. 10.30 aim.) ATHENS, July 16.
