RUMANIAN OPPOSITION LEADERS ARRESTED AS “ABOUT TO ESCAPE”
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON; July 16. The Rumanian. Government, in a statement dealing with the arrest of Opposition leaders who were taken into custody as they were about to board an aircraft. “ in a bid to escape after preparing to overthrow Rumania’s democratic regime,” alleged that the Opposition leaders secured the help of a ' Rumanian air force pilot ‘by force.” . All the persons arrested were under the orders of the president of the National Peasant Party, Dr Julius Maniu. They included Jon Mihalanc, vice-chairman of the Peasant Party, Nicolaj Penescu, the party's secretarygeneral, Ilija Lazar, a .member of the party’s, permanent parliamentary delegation, and Ikolaj Karadino, director of the party’s newspaper \ Dreptatea._ The 10 arrested as accomplices included two airmen and two car drivers. , The statement called _ the arrested persons “ criminal ariti-popular eler ments who were to face a tribunal and popular indignation as the Tesult of their alleged acts.”
