SICKNESS PLAYS BIG PART IN TIME LOSS IN INDUSTRY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 26. The time lost in industry through accidents exceeded the loss through industrial unrest, but more time was lost through sickness, said the Director of Industrial Hygiene, Dr T. O. Garland, addressing the AVellington branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand last night. He said this fact was little appreciated in the Press stories of industrial- unrest. Dr Garland said he had seen a large number of health clauses in some awards, and trada union interest in workers’ health, but on the whole the unions were not well informed, because of the lack of technological information. “It is long past time when medical officers and nurses should be appointed to supervise industrial welfare. There should be a protective service for those workers who are exposed to risks. There is scope for a nation-wide effort to improve the health standards of workers,” said Dr Garland,
