HARBOUR COLLISION DURING THICK FOG IN SYDNEY AREA
SYDNEY, May 16. During a thick fog which blanketed the harbour until late this morning, the Lane Cove ferry Kariugal crashed into the stern of the moored Dutch freighter Abbekerk. The upper deck Canopy and decking of the ferry were flattened for several feet, and glass and woodwork were splintered, but the Karingal was not damaged below the waterline. She proceeded to Circular Quay with, her passengers, none of whom was injured. The ferry services were disrupted, and there were many close shaves as the ferries groped their way across the harbour with full complements of workers, but no other accidents have been reported! All planes were grounded at Mascot Aerodrome between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., and detonator signals were used on suburban railways where signal lights were obscured. The fog thickened and descended after the Tasman flying boat had left Rose Bay for Auckland, at 6 a.m.
