LONGER WOOL SEASON NOT FAVOURED BY LOCAL BROKER

Commenting on the message cabled from London yesterday saying that wool trade opinion favoured a longer wool marketing season in New Zealand, a Dunedin broker stated, this morning that he did not think the proposal would be favoured by the trade in New Zealand. , The principal objection at the present time was that New Zealand stores would have great difficulty in holding the wool for a nine-months’ season. Although the stores were at present working at pressure to put the wool through within four months, this meant that storage space was provided after the wool season for grain, peas, and seed. If the wool were held for the longer period there would be little space left for produce, he said. New Zealand stores are simply not designed for such a long wool season,” he said! “ After the wool has been disposed, of thousands of sacks of grain are received for storage. Contract storage, for flour millers, for example, absorbs a large amount of space. Although under the present system the wool , brokers have to pay a tremendous amount of overtime in wages to prepare the wool for sale within three or four months, it has been found that it is better under New Zealand conditions to have a short but intensive wool season, ship the wool promptly, and free the stores for grain and seed.”
