HIGHER RATES OF PAY (Rec. 8 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 16. Beginning on July 1, higher pay rates will operate in Australia’s three fighting services at an annual cost of £3,000,000. The object- is to induce men to make the services their career. Details announced to-day by the Minister of Defence, Mr J. J. Dedman, are as follows: Recruit pay to consist of 10s a day without deferment, in addition to rations, quarters, and clothing over a seven-day week. Minor recruits are to receive 8s 6d a day for the first six months, and 11s thereafter. Military efficiency, trade skill, and good conduct are to be, recognised in all services by pay increments, in which the Army rates will rise to 11s. 13s, and 15s a day for privates Provision is made tor clothing, maintenance, marriage, and separation allowances, and for retirement gratuities of £360 after 12 years and £l2O after six years.
