Effect of Fuel Shortage Retards Economic Recovery

(Rec. noon.) LONDON. May 1 6Mr Herbert Morrison, Lord President of the Council, in an interview, said that until more people could, be got into the textile industry, the public must resign itself to clothes rationing continuing indefinitely. Mr Morrison, looking at the fuel situation, industrial production, man power, balance of payments, and the general attitude of the nation, said everything was in a state of flux. There had not been so far any bad drop in exports, but the increase they should be getting in 1947 could not begin until the effect of the fuel shortage was overcome. April export figures would be just over £82,500,000, compared with the average of £83,000,000 for the first quarter of I 947. They were trying to run a much busier and a more productive economy than before the * war, with more workers in jobs, but without enough fuel, raw materials, and food to support the effort. The balance of payments position turned badly against Britain.
