DECISION ON STATE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT SITE EXPECTED TO BE MADE NEXT WEEK
The policy to be adopted by the Government Housing Department in providing new State houses in the Dunedin area will be investigated by the assistant director, Mr R. B. Hammond, when he arrives for a threeday conference next week. The possibility of building between 3,000 and 4,000 State bouses at Wingatui in the biggest scheme yet launched in this part of New Zealand (as revealed at the last meeting of the City Council) will b 9 investigated by Mr Hammond. Three concrete proposals, and a possible fourth, will be submitted to Mr Hammond, it is understood, in an endeavour to provide sufficient land for a major scheme. Besides the Wingatui project, which was investigated by the Works Committee of the City Council, suggestions will also be examined for extending the Corstorphinc housing area and also the purchasing of suitable pockets of land within the existing city boundaries A fourth proposal, that has the sympathy of some Labour members ot the City Council, is the provision of a large housing site at Waitati. It ;s urged in favour of this idea that the completion of the Sawyers Bay-Waitati tunnel would, by substantially reducing travelling time, make . this area a popular nearby residential district. The assistant director will arrive in Dunedin on Tuesday night, and will spend Wednesday and Thursday at least in conference with his departmental officers, engineers of the Public Works Department, members of the City Council, and other interested parties.
