OHAI MINE PURCHASED BY GOVERNMENT
(Special.) WELLINGTON, May 2. The Government has purchased the Star- mine in the Ohai district, stated the Minister of Mines, the Hon. A. McLagah, to-day. The mine lies between the Wairakei and Morley, which are State owued, and an important advantage which the Minister pointed out is that the three mines could be worked as a complete area, avoiding the necessity for leaving largo blooks of coal on the boundaries and enabling hundreds of thousands of tons to be extracted which would otherwise-have to remain. “ W T e are confident,” added Mr McLagan, “ that'the Morley seam goes under the Star area, and we have driven the Wairakei seam close to the Star boundary, and this should also continue in that area. Wc expect to be able to work a small part of the Star area under open-cast methods and further step up the Southland coal supply this winter.” The Minister, in reply to % question, described the Star mine production as high-grade domestic coal, which was aiio used for the railways.
