BRITAIN’S TRADE WITH HARD CURRENCY AREAS SHOWS FAVOURABLE TURN

(N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent ) (Rec. 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, April 28. According to an analysis in the latest issue of the ‘ Board of Trade Journal ’ Britain’s trade with “ hard ” currency areas, including North and South America, Sweden, Switzerland, and Portugal took a more favourable _ turn in January and February. British exports in those two months represented 21.4 per cent, of the total, compared with 19.97 for the fourth quarter of last year, and 18.12 for the third quarter. “ What, perhaps, is even more encouraging,” says the ‘ Manchester Guardian,’ “is that it was a slightly larger percentage of our total exports than that recorded for 1938 It is still, of course, far too early to assume that the January-Febrnary experience marks a definite change of the trend. Nevertheless, it does supply some evidence that the efforts of exporters with, or in spite of, the help of the Board of Trade, are succeeding in expanding our sales of British goods in those areas where they are most needed.”
