INCREASED CHARGES

WEST HARBOUR COUNCIL PROTESTS At a meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council last night it was decided to enter a protest to the Health Department against a: proposed increase in the charges on the borough for inspections by health officers. The new charges would be out of all proportion to the value of the inspectors’ work, claimed Cr J. Hill-Scully. The principle in this question was the same as the Hospital rates increase, which the council had opposed. It was the opinion of Cr A; McEwan that the inspections were of great benefit to the borough. Following a discussion, it was agreed to protest to the Health Department. The meeting was attended by the mayor (Mr T. R. Bradshaw) and Crs McEwan, J. R. Murdoch, J. C. Mitchell, J. Henderson, P. Mclvor, A. Cleveland, and Hill-Sciilly. Cr McEwan was welcomed back after his illness.

The council decided to support a proposal to use Invercargill as a terminal for a trans-Tasman air service.

The town clerk (Mr P. R. Buckland) outlined the financial position of the council. He said the estimated revenue to March 31 was £1,842, and added to .this were debts outstanding amounting to £6OB. The total revenue would therefore be £2,450. The bank overdraft and accounts came to £1,984 9s sd, leaving an estimated credit balance of £466 10s 7d at the end of the financial year. A deputation was received from the Fire Brigade requesting the council to be responsible for the maintenance of the brigade’s machine.—lt was decided to give favourable consideration to the request. The Ravensbourne Football Club wrote asking for Moller Park to liq put in order in readiness for the football season.—The town clerk was authorised to arrange for the grass to be cut. The DX Club, Dunedin, was granted permission to erect a hut in the borough' for use as a listening post. At a special meeting, held before the monthly meeting, a new by-law, which provided for the licensing of food premises in the borough, was confirmed.
