“ CORRUPT" CHINESE ADMINISTRATION

According to Chinese Press despatches, between 3,000 and 4,000 were killed in a Formosan rebellion, which has now spread to the island’s southern tip, where angry mobs are surging through the streets smashing store fronts, storming Government buildings, and beating Chinese. The Governor, Chen Yi, is reported to be negotiating with the natives in an attempt to end the uprisings. Europeans are in no danger, and assurances have been given that the rebellion is directed' only against “ corrupt ” Chinese administration. The revolt began when Chinese authorities, who are alleged to be clamping “ excessive ” economic controls, conducted a search for smuggled, cigarettes.
