ARGENTINE MAIZE
DEAL WITH BRITAIN HUGE PROFIT HADE LONDON, March 2. The Argentine Government’s bulk selling agency is making another huge profit, this time ,on maize deals with Britain, says the ‘ Daily Telegraph.’ The newspaper previously* reported that Argentina had made 100 per cent, profit on a wheat deal with Britain. It now says that of the £1.600,000 which Britain will pay for 1,000,OCX) tons of the new crop of maize not less than £750.000 will be profit for the Argentine Government, and it may be as much as £910,000.. The profit which Argentina is making is at the expense of the Argentine farmers—not to any substantial extent at the expense of Britain. ,
Argentina is selling maize to Britain at 332 shillings a ton f.0.b., which is comparable with the ( present price of United States maize, Dut the Argentine Government pays its farmers only 151 shillings a ton and appropriates the difference.
