FEBRUARY BIRTHS
PREDICTIONS NOT FULFILLED
Confident predictions made in 6ome quarters in Dunedin before Christmas thjat February, would be: a record month , for births, some estimates’ putting the figure as high as 500, have not been borne out by the notifications made during the first fortnight. For the half-month ended February 14, only 88 births in Dunedin city and suburbs were recorded by the district registrar. | Since the beginning of the year 324 births have been reported, of .which 118 were notified. since the beginning of this month. This compares with the 1946 figure to the same date of 251, anti the 1945 return of 221. The 1947 increase over the 1945 figure amounts to 46 per cent. With more than 1,300 marriages in Dunedin last year, a' marked increase on the 1946 birth figures is expected. The upward trend in this section of the annual vital statistics for the district that first became noticeable in 1943 is thus expected to continue in 1947 and touch a new : peak. ,
