DIVERSION TO CANADA

NO DIRECT COMPENSATION MADE TO BRITAIN

(Rec. 10 a.m.) OTTAWA, Feb. 18. The Agriculture Minister, Mr J. G. Gardiner, in a ; return tabled in the House of Commons, said 5,000,0001 b of New Zealand butter would be received in Canada by February 20 and “ further importations to the maximum of 12,000,0001 b would be governed by our future domestic position.”. . Mr Gardiner, who supplied this information at tho request of Mr. John Bracken, the Progressive Conservative leader, said the butter was being imported by the Agricultural Department’s Dairy. Products Board. Payment was being made to the British Food Ministry, which originally bought it., The British Government’s, permission was necessary for its diversion.
