ACTED FROM COWARDICE
COLLABORATION WITH GERMANS BRITISH ACTOR - SENTENCED (Rec. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON/, Jan. 15. The British actor, Anthony Cedric Steane, found guilty of entering the service of the German broadcasting system during the war, was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. Steane, in evidence, said he was forced to broadcast for the' Germans by their threats concerning his family. He received an avGrage'of £2 a week. He denied that ho had any intention of assisting the Germans. Whnt he did was done under duress. When in May, 1941, he refused to broadcast, he was beaten up by three Gestapo men, apd lie had an ear almost torn off.
