Special Train for South African Royal Tour
TEMPORARY HOME ON WHEELS
The Royal train, which will be used for the forthcoming tour of their Majesties and the Royal Princesses through the Union of South Africa, and recently inspected by them at Birmingham, is ready for shipment to South Africa. These coaches have been constructed by the MetropolitanCarmell Carriage and Wagon
Company, in the remarkably short time of eight months — under normal pre-war conditions two'years would not have been an unreasonable period. Four cars are for the use of the King, Queen, the Princesses, and the Royal staff. The exterior of the coaches is cream coloured, with gold lining. The cars are steel built, insulated against heat and cold, with sealed double armour-plate windows, and are air conditioned. They are lined throughout with chosen Empire woods, and all the corridors are lined with veneered walnut. * Their Majesties chose their own colour schemes for their respective State apartments. Other features of the State apartments are the inclusion of wireless sets, a radio-gramophone, bathrooms, and their own telephone exchange.
