TRAINERS STAGE NOVEL CONTESTS EVENT UNDER RACING CONDITIONS (Special.) CHRISTCHURCH. November 14. A series of trial gallops organised by local trainers held at illiccarton this morning aroused considerable interest, and was watched by a large number of the public. The events were run under racing conditions, and close on „ 100 horses engaged at the New Zealand Cup meeting took part. TWO-YEAR-OLDS. A race for two-year-olds over four furlong 6 was run in Swo divisions. The first was won by Sea Flower, a bay filly by Neptune from Kudos, who cost Mr W. T. Hazlett, of Invercargill, 1,600 guineas os a yearling, and is a halfsister to Koronah. Sea Flower was ridden by N. E. Eastwood, a son of the late A. Eastwood, and apprenticed to his 6tep-father, C. G. Humphries. She was always prominent, and, ridden out more vigorously than (Battle Abbey and Carry On, piloted this pair over the last furlong. The time was 50 2-5. Renowned, by Beaulivre from Cuddle, led 1 throughout the second division and was first on to the course proper from Paper Robe, Kartikeya, and Primitive, these four finishing in that order, Renowned having a neck to spare at the finish. The time was again 50 2-5. CUP REHEARSAL. There were 13 starters in the event for New Zealand Cup homes and three-year-olds. ißahine, ’Golden Souvenir, and Racket were the slowest to move off, and in the early stages Privilege led from Palin Bearer, Lord Elgin, Royal Tan, and Bridge Acre, with Golden Souvenir near the rear. Lord Elgin entered the straight wide out in front of Privilege and Palm Bearer, but a furlong from the post Bridge Acre drew out, while Golden Souvenir, making up a lot of ground from the home turn, threw out a challenge inside the final furlong. In a close tussle Bridge Acre beat Golden Souvenir. by half a length, with a similar margin to Lord Elgin, and then cqme, close up, Palm. Bearer, Foxchase; Rahine, Western Front, and Privilege. Bridge Acre was going very freely at the finish, but Golden Souvenir could have been closer if desired. His performance ' was very ipipressive, as he gave the leaders about 10 lengths’ start at the half-mile. Lord Elgin also went well. He is an unlikely starter in the' Cup. The distance was covered in 1.57, the last half-mile taking 52 3-5. HACK SEVEN. A race for hacks over seven furlongs was run in three divisions. In the first the Auckland-owned Gay Joy took charge entering upon the last furlong and won by four lengths from Beau Ideal, with half a length to Night Blush, Volomai, and Rakata. The time was 1.29 3-5, the last four furlongs in 51 3-5. The hurdler, Battle Chief, went to the front early in the run home in the second division and won by two lengths from Detain, who did his best work over the closing stages. Tomahawk was a length away, a length in front of Legal Right and Mont Leigh. The time was 1.30, the last four in 52. Leeston led into the straight in tile third division from IRobingay, Stabilise, All Quality, Koronah, and Falconbridge, but with a furiong to go the last-named made a run through on the fence to talke charge and wan by three lengths from Leeston, with Koronah two lengths back, a head in front of Wane, (Robingay, and Lady Welbeck. ■ OPEN SEVEN. There were 13 starters for the open seven-furlong event. Centime was one of the early leaders and was first into the straight from Periwig, Fearless, Denary, Sanscrit, and Finalist. Sanskrit forced her way through in the run home to outstay Centime and to beat her by a length, with a similar margin to Finalist. Salary was a head away, with Bruce finishing on next. The time was 1.29, the last four furlongs taking. 51.
