Mr Justice Archer arrived in Dunedin yesterday. Mr J. L. Mclndoe left this morning for Auckland. Mr L. C. Greig, engineer-manager of the corporation transport department, who has been attending a transport conference at New Plymouth, returned to Dunedin yesterday. Flight-lieuteant Rf Thomson, returned to Dunedin yesterday after service overseas with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Before entering the services he was employed by the cor- ; poration transport department.' Mr W. B. Richards left yesterday to attend the National Council: meeting of the ■ New Zealand Federation of Labour in Wellington. Mr Peter McKellar, M.A., who has been a member of the staff of the philosophy and psychology departments at the Otago University, left yesterday for the north, en route to England for further study at the University College, London. , < , A farewell function to Mr W. H. McEneany, who has been promoted to the position of supervisor of the telegraphic branch at Christchurch, was held yesterday. The deputy-chief postmaster (Mr A- S. Powley ) presented Mr MoEneanly. with a cheque on behalf .of the staff, and wished (Mr and Mrs McEneany and family every happiness in Christchurch. Mr P. W. Donaldson (superintendent) also spoke, and Mr McEneany replied., Mr McEneany will leave for Christchurch on Friday. One of the leading Baptists of*the United States, and a member of the exeoutive of the Baptist World Alliance, the Rev. Dr M. E. Dodd, has arrived in Auckland from Sydney, by air on a goodwill visit to the Dominion. . Dr Dodd said he would spend 10 days in New Zealand, and hoped to recruit some members of the Baptist Union of New Zealand to attend the first postwar congress of the alliance; to be held in'Copenhagen in J uly, 1947. He has just completed a tour of the Australian Baptist missions, and will return to America by air at the end of the month. Sixty-eight years of age, Dr Dodd has been pastor of the Shreveport Baptist Church, Louisiana, since; 1912.; ' - ■« - • •> .-
Advice has been received from the Apostolic Delegate in Sydney that the Very Rev. father James Long, for 25 years parish priest of Greymouth, has been' appointed Domestic Prelate by His Holiness the Pope with the title of Monsignor Long. One of the senior arid best-known priests of the diocese, he was vicar-general during the latter years of the 1 episcopate-of the late Bishop Brodie. Returning to the Dominion after an absence! of 23 years, the King’s surgeon and a 1924 Olympic Games representative, Dr A. E. Porritt, arrived on the Pan-American clipper East Indian yesterday. Dr Porritt said the Royal Family had borne the strain of ,the war years remarkably, well, and .: were, all enjoying good health. Although they hoped to have recreation in their South African tour," it was not being-undertaken for. holiday reasons. Dr Porritt will spend a fortnight in New Zealand before returning to England. He will visit his brother at Putekebua, near Kaikohe, for a few days before going to Wanganui to stay with his father, Dr E.- E. Porritt. 1 Mr P. W. Breen was appointed to" represent the Otago Automobile Association on the Dunedin Chamber -pf Commerce at a meeting of the association’s executive held last night. The death ol Mr C, W. Sundstrum was referred to at the monthly meeting of the exeoutive of the Otago Automobile Association held last night. The president, Mr G. W. Ferens, said that Mr Sundstrum had been a member of the executive from 1932 to 1942, and as mark of respect members stood in silence.
