AMERICA OPPOSED TO SOCIALISM

(Rec. 11.15 a.m.) BERLIN, Nov. 4. General Clay, addressing a Press conference to-day, said _ that Mr Bevin’s plan for thp socialisation of Western Germany’s basic industries was not basically incompatible with American views. He added that America felt that socialisation should eventually be decided by the German people. Permission for it was written into the proposed constitutions for the three States in the American zone.

General Clay said that the Russian and American authorities were at present informally discussing increasing the level of Germany’s industry to permit the taking of reparations from -current production. The issue would probably come before the Big Four in New York. The talks in Berlin were exploratory and designed to solve the current stalemate of German economic unity. .
