CYPRUS REPLACES CAIRO TRANSFER FROM EGYPT (IRec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 20. The Exchange Telegraph’s correspondent at Nicosia says that local newspapers publish reports that the British military headquarters at Cairo is being transferred to Cyprus, the personnel of the headquarters, 4,000 strong, to be housed in a building under construction near Famagusta. The newspapers also cite unusual activity in the port_ at Famagusta, where dozens of British lorries transporting building ■ materials are _ an additional indication that some British military installations in Egypt are being transferred to Cyprus. Reuter’s Cyprus correspondent, supporting the Exchange Telegraph report, says activity throughout the island indicates that British military installations in Egypt are being transferred to Cyprus. Ships carrying equipment in recent weeks have been arriving at Famagusta almost daily. A thousand German prisoners are working in a new light railway. _ > Little doubt exists that the . island will be used as an important Royal Air Force centre. The Larnaca Aerodrome has been en- . tirely taken over after the recent announcement that it would be closed to civil aviation.
