HOT THIS LAND ALONE
NEW VERSE TO NATIONAL ANTHEM (llec. 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 20. There were empty seats at St. Paul’s when their Majesties, Mr and Mrs Attlee, and Cabinet Ministers attended the United Nations Association service, and when ticket-holders had still not arrived after the service had begun, the cathedral officials brought in, first, nurses, and then members of the public from the waiting crowds outside, says the Press Association. This added to the representative nature of the congregation, which had been designed as a national cross-section. Those present included the dominion High Commissioners. Notable absentees included Mr Churchill, and Viscount Cecil of Chelwood, honorary life president of the United Nations Association. At His Majesty’s direction a new second verse of the National Anthem, which was composed 80 years ago, was sung for the first time before their Majesties. Not on this land alone, But be God’s mercies known From shore to shore! Lord make the nations see That men should brothers be, And form one family The wide world o’er.
