CARPENTERS’ UNION
Mr H. D. Armour (president) presided over the monthly meeting of the Otago Carpenters’ Union, when it decided, in view of the increases made in payment of labourers to an amount equal to that of carpenters, and an increase of 4Jd per hour to engineers employed by freezing companies, to take steps to obtain a similar increase, for carpenters. ' It was decided to make representations to the Minister of Finance for taxation relief in regard to tool allowance and overtime payments. The .tool allowance, which is in the nature of depreciation on tools, should, it was considered, be excluded from income tax and Social Security charges, and in view of taxation remissions to encourage production made to employers, the meeting considered that the exclusion of overtime payments ;from income tax would encourage increased production by the workers. The question of increasing the contribution of members was dealt with, and the executive was asked to bring down a report showing the necessity for such increase, the issue to be decided by a vote of the membership. Advice was received from the head office of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union that, except in Otago and Southland, carpenters employed in preparing ships for cargo would be. transferred to the Waterside Workers’ Union, and those on ship repair work would be transferred to the Shipwrights and Boatbuilders’ Union. It was decided to nominate Mrs F.' Bullen for position of president of the 0.L.R.C., made vacant by Mr H. Brown leaving the country. Mr F. Gill was nominated for the position of riiinute secretary.
