(Rec. 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 19. The Minister of Supply and Shipping, Senator Ashley, after presiding at _ the conference of shipping and union representatives, said there were good prospects of an early settlement of the Sydney waterfront strike.' Senafor Ashley added that the Stevedoring Industry Commission would discuss the dispute next Monday. The shipping companies yesterday diverted five freighters to other ports because of the Sydney waterfront strike, which has tied up 57 ships and 105,000 tons of cargo. To-morrow in Melbourne the Emergency Committee of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions will meet to consider the recent interview with Federal Ministers on its demands for a higher basic wage and the relaxation of wage pegging. _ On the same day the moulders aiid ironworkers in Victoria are expected to decide to throw idle all Victorian foundries. Melbourne traimvaymen will meet to-morrow and are expected to decide on a tram stoppage for an indefinite period as from Monday. The Australian Railways Union has promised to stop all suburban trains if the tram men go on strike, and the Electrical Trade Union has declared that it will support the strike. A one-day State-wide rail stoppage in South Australia begins at midnight on Sunday.
