GRATEFUL TO N.Z.
SCOTS ENJOY OUR FOOD “ Once again I write to thank you for your kindness in sending me another parcel,” writes an Edinburgh woman to a friend in Dunedin. “ The tins of lard and dripping are a great help as we only get Jib of lard per person per month which does not go very far. Of course, the tins of meat are useful and are kept for our meatless days. They make a lovely dinner. We had tins of New Zealand tongues in the shops here, but they did not last-very long, as the people know a good thing when they see it, 32 points
for a •■tin, too. We managed to get one as we did not use all our bread units, and we are allowed to change them into points. It’s a good idea; or you can change points into bread units. We don’t eat much bread in our house. It is dark coloured these days. I sent away to the Stork Margarine people last week for a book on bread making -so I hope mother will be able to make something out of it. “ Well, Minnie, I do think it is a shame asking you to give up tea, butter, and sugar coupons. Our tea ration is quite good* We get Jib one month and fib the following month per head. Sugar is Jib per week, and you can have sugar instead of jam. That means 11b per month. We always do. this and make our own jam. We have lots of plums in the shops just now, but other jam fruits have been very scarce, this year owing to bad weather. We managed' to make a little raspberry, strawberry and plum, so that is not bad is it? We get 6oz between butter and margarine per week. I always eat the margarine, I prefer it. I do know that New Zealead has done her bit in helping Britain, and in a. big way, too. That subject came up in our office one day and I can tell you everyone agreed and appreciated the fact that we had been greatly helped by New Zealand. I can assure you that you have done your bit and more. You must have sent a large amount of parcels here and never wearied, always 'so faithful.”
