Saturday at Forbury. Sand Piper is giving away- a second to start in the Royal Handicap to-morrow. Double Cross Fancied. Double Cross, the winner olf the Geraldine Cup last month, will be on hand again for the big race on the
same course .to-morrow. . The opposi- ’ tiou is not particularly strong and the Defaulter horse should not have any difficulty in extending his record. Prefers Hard Track. Great Chum was backed and beaten in the mud at Wingatpi, but his showing on a hard track at Washdyke last Saturday, when lie dead-heated with ltahine, ■ was more impressive. With 8.0 on his back in the Orari Handicap, to-morrow he should again go close to carry off the major honours. Good Cup Trial. i Following her third to Bernboroiigh and Columnist' in the , Melbourne Stakes, at weight-for-age, last Saturday, First In has firmed in fayourtism foj' the Caulfield Cup. A. K. Didliam said the , mare ran an excellent race and finished well, but he considers Bernboroiigh will take all sorts of beating in the Caulfield Cup to-mor-row. , May Shape Better. Paddy Potts won at Forbury last April when the sting was out of the going, and may improve on last Saturday’s placing in the chosen v race to-morrow. He began badly in the King George Handicap last Saturday, but ran a good race later in the day to finish third to Gold Peg and Stimulant in the Flying Handicap, of a mile and three furlongs. . , Queen General’s Prospects. Queen General signalised that he will not be long in being returned a winner by finishing fast into second place behind the brilliant English-bred filly, ; Lincoln Fair, in the novice race at Washdyke last Sntuprday. He is sure to have friends in the Wainui Stakes at Geraldine to-morrow. Another novice in this event, who, like Queen’s General, has been galloping well on the tracks, is Kirkella. Smart Hack. . ' ' Legal Rose, who is a smart hack over sprint distances, is down to make her first appearance of the season in the Gladstone Handicap at Geraldine tomorrow. Her record last season was impressive, as in 17 starts : she won three times and finished farther back than fourth on only ■ three occasions. Legal Rose is a six-vear-old mare by Solicitor General from Arrowrose, and is trained at Riccarton by E. Kingan. Temuka Hurdles. Boolamskee, who finished a good second in the Grand National Hurdles at liis last start, is an acceptor in the Temuka Hurdles at Geraldine. If ready to produce his best he would be hard to beat, in the same race, two promising young hurdlers in Lost Art and Montello d’Oro were winners at their last attempt. Lost Art, in particular, appeals as one with a big future over the battens. ' Derene’s Brilliant Speed. Derene gave nothing else a chance from the barrier rise in the Flying Handicap last Saturday, her brilliant speed having most of the field in trouble a long way from home. Even with 9.0 on her back to-morrow, the Defaulter mare promises to be hard to beat again. John o’ Loudon’s good form at the Grand National meeting points to his chances, while Grill will also be in demand. Place Prospect. Eastern Coin, who will be making bis second appearance this season, is not ’without prospects in the President’s Handicap at Geraldine to-morrow. The Paper Money gelding showed good form over a mile and a-quarter last season, the Kurow Clip and Oamaru Cup being two races which he won. Eastern Coin was started in the sprint at Washdyke last Saturday and the outing should serve to sharpen him up. He is trained at Oamaru by G. Paterson, who also prepares Joy Rosa. Difficult Task. When Lucky Bill split honours with Christmas Queen in the Taliuna Handicap at Forbury in May the track was very heavy. Should the going be wet again to-morrow it will not prejudice bis chance, although he is set a difficult task from 60yds behind. He had nothing to spare from Mack Sure last Saturday after being near the leaders all the way, and with a big handicap to make up in the early stages to-morrow lie would need to show improvement. Auckland Prospects. Although Cowper and Balgowan were beaten out of a place in the Mitchelson Cup last Saturday, they both ran excellent races and are expected to derive benefit from the outing. Cowper made most of the running, but tired into fourth place in the last furlong, while Balgowan. who was favorite, did not receive a good passage and was asked to cover a lot of extra ground. Both horses worked well yesterday morning and are expected to shape well in the big race at Auckland to-morrow. Blue Trout Retired. The stable mates, Irish Note and Blue Trout, will be mising from the Awapnni meeting. The former has had a recurrence of his old trouble and it is doubtful if lie will be seen out again for some time. Blue Trout’s ailment, which was thought to be a jarred joint, hns proved to be. more deeprooted and it has been decided to retire her to her owner’s stud at Oamaru. Impressive Work-out. Paced by Hardy Annual, Maximum pleased by the manner in which she worked over a mile and a-half in 3min 25see at Addington on Tuesday morning, and she should prove hard to beat if taken to Forbury Park, where she is handicapped oh the 12yds mark in the Churchill Handicap (says the ‘ Press ’). The Maxegin mare lias recorded two wins and two minor placings in her last four starts for R. Manson, who trains her, and, now that she has settled down to race solidly, she should make the grade to good company this season.
