—Ministerial.— The Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) arrived in Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. Hanan arrived in Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. _ • Reference to the death of Mr J; Williams, a master at Otago Boys’ High School from 1918 to 1938. was made at. the monthly meeting of the Otago'High Schools Board yesterday, members standing in silence. : The appointment of two members of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control, Council was gazetted last night. They are Mr W. L. Newnham, of the Ministry of Works, and Mr J. W. Andrews, Lower Hutt. Mr Newnham is to be chairman of the council.

Justice Smith, Mr Justice Fair; Mr Justice Callen( and Mr Justice Corpish., The congratulations of the Otago High Schools Board were exfended to its secretary, Mr C. R. McLean, yesterday on his appointment to the position of secretary to the Otago Education Board. The chairman of the board, Mr W. R. Brugh, mentioned that Mr McLean’s wide knowledge. of educational administration and his fine'personal attributes had made him the “ ideal secretary ” during the past 27 years. . ... . ■ ■; . Miss Jean Campbell, national youth secretary of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand, is to return to Canada to take up the post of World Fellowship secretary on the staff of the Y.W.C.A. of Canada. She will leave the Dominion beforq the end of the year, and will take up her Canadian post in January next. The National-Board met m Wellington last night to bid. Secretariat has announced the apnointment_of J)r E. G, Carter, PhD.. B.Sc., F-RJA; as director of the new .department =.of scientific and '.technical,. liaison,- ac- - cording to advice received by the -New Zealand Wool Board. Dr Carter, 35-vear-old Londoner, was formerly on the staff, of the, Wool Industries Research 'Association in Leeds.' One of the main functions, of the new department will be the collation, co-ordina-tion, and circulation of scientific knowledge in connection with wool re-. -- search.
