! (From Our Correspondent.) OBITUARY. Two very old residents of Milton district passed away this week. Mr Joseph Martin, who died on Sunday, at the age of 77, was the youngest son of the late Edward and Annie Martin, pioneer residents of Moneymore district, where lie was born and educated. On leaving school he took up farming in the Moneymore district, and some 35 yehrs ago sold out and came to Milton, where he;entered the carrying business, and carried on in this till about five years ago. He was’ interested in cricket, and was an old member of Court Bruce A.O.F. Lodge, members of which acted as pallbearers at the cemetery. In 1900 he married Miss Jane Allison, a member of an old -Moneymore family, and she survives him, together with five daughters—Mesdames W. Heads and N. Drinnan (Milton), W. Bayly (Hawera), L. McKenzie (Dunedin), and J. Wilson (GHenomaru). Mrs Nicholas McLean, who died on Monday at the age of 98, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Barron, and was born at Kirkliston, near Edinburgh.. With her two brothers she left Glasgow in the ship E. P. Bouverie on December 5, 1868, and arrived in ! Port Chalmers on March 14, 1869, after a voyage of 103 days. After a j short residence jn Dunedin she came to Milton district and in 1870 married Mr McLean, who was in business as a builder and engineer, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Dr Stuart, of Knox Church. Mr McLean died in 1900, and deceased is survived by three daughters and one son, namely, Mesdames Wm. Clark (Kelso), W. Thornton (Milton), Chas. Smith (Oamaru), and Mr D. McLean (Milton). There are also 15 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. SUMMER SPORT. Milton Cricket Club opened the season, on Saturday when there was a good attendance of members. A match, president v. vice-president was played, the former winning by 118 runs to 103 runs. Best batsnien for the day were E. Currie, 71 retired; W. Arbuekle 48, and A. Heads 17. Currie (three for six), H.E. Windle (two for 12), B. Lyall (trvo for four), and Sim (three for 21), showed good form with the ball. There was a good attendance at the opening of Milton Bowling Club, visitors being present from Balclutha and Kaitangata. Mr P. W. Gray (president) declared the season open, and members stood in silence as a mark if respect to Mr T. Clayton, a past-president and member, who recently passed away. His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. Keinan)", extended best wishes as did representatives of visiting clubs. Mrs Gray rolled the first bowl, and an enjoyable afternoon, was spent in fours on a green that was in fair order. , Milton Tennis Club also opened the season on Saturday, there being a fair attendance. Mr G. Thomson declared the season open, and a Yankee tournament filled in the afternoon.GOLF. In the final, of the Balclutha ladies’. A’ grade championship Mrs Sinclair ! defeated Mrs Aitken. ■ v In friendly matches played with Kaitangata club, the Balclutha ladies were successful, while in the men’s match the result was a draw, each side winning four matches. POLITICAL. The campaign for the Clutha seat was opened on Tuesday. when Miss Mabel Howard, Labour, M.P. for Christchurch East, addressed meetings : at Milton and Balclutha. There were fair attendances, and the speaker dealt : with the home aid scheme, social security. standardisation and other Labour activities. She received attentive hear- j ings, her remarks being frequently ap- j plauded. Mr J. P. Thompson, Labour candidate for Clutha, was alsci present | and briefly addressed the meetings.
