ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

CHINESE BOY FOUND HANGED. A Chinese schoolboy was found hanged in his bedroom at his home in Wellington; on Monday afternoon. He was Edward Chockman Chee, aged 14, of Ellice Avenue. The boy returned to his home as usual after school, and appeared to be in normal spirits. He had something to eat and then went to his room with his school hooks.

Later,- when he was called, there was no response, and the door was found by a member of the household to be locked. The . lad’s, body was. seen from an outside » window hanging in the. room, a dressing gown girdle being round his neck. A friend said last night that he believed the boy’s death was accidental. The boy had been reading a good deal about the arrangements for hanging the condemned Nazis, and it was thought that he had been experimenting to see bow long it was possible to. endure hanging without suffocating. SGHOOLGIRL JUMPS INTO RIVER. A 17-year-old schoolgirl, Noelle West, whose parents are believed to live at Auckland, was rescued from the Te Henui River at New Plymouth yesterday morning. She was conscious, and had apparently been in the water only a short time. She was taken to hospital, where her condition last night was reported to be satisfactory. A nearby resident found the girl lying in about 2ft of water. She is a pupil of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, where she is a boarder. Residents of'the locality said that they heard the girl screaming as she ran towards the bridge along the street which bounds the high school grounds. When she reached the bridge they saw her climb on to the railings in the centre and disappear. The height of the brjdge above the water at this point is about 45ft.
