SAVIOURS OF MALTA
NAVY AND MERCHANT MARINE SPITFIRE PILOTS' BIG ROLE " You have probably heard it was the admirals; field-marshals, and airmarshals who saved Malta," said Sir Keith Park in responding to a welcome tendered him at a civic reception last night. But the speaker characterised Bueh sentiments as " a lot of tripe." " The men who Baved Malta," he went on, " were the men of the merchant' navy, escorted by the Royal Navy. At the same time, their efforts to bring much-needed supplies to the island would have been useless if the Spitfire pilots had not been able, to operate and provide air cover for them." .
Continuing his remarks. Sir . Keith said • " Rommel became so cocky that he got his staff to draw up.plans of accommodation at Shepherd's Hotel in Cairo. Those wlio had been ' stiing ' there thought it would be a good idea," he concluded amidst laughter. .
