AMMUNITION EXPLODES
DISASTER AT NEW JERSEY SEVERAL PEOPLE MISSING NEW YORK, April 30. Three explosions on ■ board • the destroyer escort Solar virtually demolished the ship and destroyed an ammunition warehouse at Early, New Jersey, where the ship, was unloading ammunition, and blew a huge gaping hole in the loading pier. A Navy "spokesman stated that one officer and six ratings were missing and 167 injured, most of them suffering from minor burns. The explosions demolished an ammunition-loaded rail truck, also a warehouse, and set on fire the pier, which stretches two miles and a-lialf into the bay.. The pier is the longest of its type in the world. Eight ratings who leaped into the water after the first blast were rescued. The vibration of the explosions smashed a plate-glass window 15 miles away. One shell landed in a yard three miles from the pier. '1 he Solar is steadily taking water. She is listing, and may sink.
