POLICE COURT
FRIDAY, MAY 3. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. FALSE PRETENCES. Faced with two charges of obtaining money under false pretences, a man aged 34, who had never previously been in trouble, pleaded guilty. Chief-detective T, Y. Hall said that last November the accused purchased furniture valued at £IOB 10s 6d under a .hire-purchase agreement. He undertook to pay £1 Is 6d a week. He actually paid £1 10s deposit, and made two further payments—£3 and £2 10s, leaving £lOl 10s 6d owing. Later he sold the furniture for £4l. He was apparently setting up house with another woman. He was arrested at Gore on April 26. i That financial difficulties were ' the reason for the accused’s lapse was the submission of Mr J. Q, Warrington, who represented him. He was a married man with three children, but he was separated from his wife, and had quite a large maintenance obligation. He had got into a hopeless muddle between races and trying to keep up his obligations, and had chosen this unfortunate way out. He had. however, been completely frank about the matter.
The accused, who had already spent seven days in gaol, was remanded in custody until Monday, to. allow of a report by the probation officer. The Magistrate suggested that his name be suppressed until then.
