DOCUMENTARY FILMS

This winter Dunedin is to have an opportunity of seeing a wide range of documentary films. The W.E.A. has organised a "Film Appreciation" class, which will meet once' a fortnight in the comfortable lecture hall of the old Medical School in King street. From the wide interest which is being increasingly shown in this type of film it is expected that a film institute will be formed from the members of this class to continue periodic screenings of such films. Such a film class in Wellington attracted record attendances, and has since continued to operate as a film institute. A documentary film has been defined as dealing " creatively with actuality " —real people and real events in a real world. In this it differs from the studio-produced film enacted by professional actors. Certain documentary titles, such as ' World of Plenty,' ' The City,' ' The River,' and ' Song of Cevlon,' have become as important as ' The Birth of a Nation ' and ' The Gold Rush ' in the history of the cinema'.
