THE CHARGE WIPES OUT VICTORY FOR RETAILERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 24. The fruiterers and greengrocers tiera jubilant to-day, having won the battle with tho Government over the contentious charges for " fruit cases and other produce containers, including tha bags and sacks in which fruit and vi'getab.es are purchased at auction. The objectionable levies, ranging from la to 3d, have been wined out by an Order in Council. The charges were collected through, the fruit produce auctioneers acting as agents of the Government, and tney were required to credit the amounts to the growers. When.the retailers emptied the cases they sold them to the case companies at slightly less than the amounts charged through the auctioneers; Many thousands of. ,emrity cases which had deteriorated have now accumulated in the hands of the A uckland companies, and claims arising; from this potential loss have been mad* against the Government. The accumulation of cases is estimated at hundreds of thousands throughout X«w Zealand, and the claims against the Government; will probably amount to thousands of pounds.
