“SMOKO” EXCEEDED
ABATTOIRS WORKERS DISMISSED STRIKE SEQUEL CRec 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 25. Sydney will be short of meat for about a week as the result of a general strike in the three metropolitan abattoirs. Terms of a settlement drawn up at a hurriedly-summoned meeting of the Meat Industry Board of Reference will be submitted to the men at the earliest opportunity, but even if the terms are acceptable to the men no stock will be available for slaughter till Tuesday. The strike began at Hivcrstonc when several employees, including the union delegate, were dismissed for exceeding the time allowed for " smoko." The award, provides for a 15-minute " smoko," but recently the men in the slaughtering section decided to extend it to 20 minutes. This was done without application to the court and against the warning of Mr Justice Cantor, who visited the works. Queensland's meat industry is still tied up by a : strike. The Industrial Court has deleted from the meat export award the preference clause to members of the Meat Industry Union. Following this, Borthwick and Sons have called for volunteers to man the Moreton meat works. • In Queensland there are 5,500 strikers, who are suffering wage losses of over £130,000.
