POWER FAILURE

STATE MINES IDLE (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, April IG. ] Four State coal mines in the Greymouth district were idle to-day be- ' cause of power failure, which early i this morning stopped the fans at the ! mines for approximately two hours. The mines were no't able to be worked 1 because of a provision in the Coal Mines Regulations, 1939, which requires that in mines in which inflammable gas has been reported 'within six months, fans must be run|ning continuously for eight hours prior I to the men entering the mine. I The mines affected are the Liverpool. Strongman, Dobson, and Wallsend i Collieries. The normal daily producI tion of the four mines together is about 1,500 tons. The power failure was caused by a lightning arrester blowing up at the Dobson station of the electric brand; of the Works Department about 4.35 a.m. The Blackball State mine, which is an " open light " colliery, is not affected.
