OTAGO HARBOUR

BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Harbour Board was held last night with Mr W. Clarke in the chair. The board was occupied for some time on a discussion of the policy of deep-dredging at the wharves, where solids beneath the slurry are being removed to increase the depth to a total of 29 feet. Some of the material had not been able to go through the Vulcan dredge and had to be rehandled and taken to sea. LANDING STAGE AT AQUARIUM. The Board of Control of the Marine Fish Hatchery wrote with respect to the condition of the landing stage at the Aquarium and asked that the board undertake the necessary work to make it safe for the public, the cost of which it was prepared to pay. It was decided to accede to this request at a later date when urgent work at present in view by the board is disposed of. NEW CRANES. The tender of Messrs A. and T. Burt in relation to the supply of two fiveton cranes was- accepted. The subcommittee considering the matter sought to include in the tender a clause imposing a penalty of £5 a day in the event of late delivery, but the tenderers declined to accept this provision. It was decided that the tender was very satisfactory, and the board's action was approved. In regard to the cranes being built for the board at Port Chalmers a progress report was tabled. The chairman said that little progress had been made, and it would be several months yet before delivery would be made. ASSISTANT PILOT. The appointment of Captain W. Rolling as assistant pilot was approved. The chairman said that Captain Rolling had had piloting experience at Wanganui, and had also visited Dunedin in ships of the Black Funnel Line. He was 44 years of age, and would begin a probationary period of three months on May 1. He was willing to study the work of dredge-master in anticipation of the present dredgemaster's resignation.
