MOST SOUTHERLY IN WORLD

BEVERLY-BEGG OBSERVATORY PLANS FOR WINTER MONTHS Beverly-Begg observatory in Dunedin is' the most southerly observatory in the world carrying out systematic observations and public demonstrations, and it is controlled by amateur astronomers in their spare time. A meeting of the Astronomical Section of the Otago branch of the Royal Society was held last week to consider and arrange the programme of activities for 1946. those present being Messrs W. D. Anderson, F.R.A.S. (chairman), G. Couling (acting observatory director), W. H. B. Hobbs, E. W- Chrisp, W. A. H. Drew and J. Riach. The Chairman extended a cordial welcome to Mr W. H. B. Hobbs, former secretary and director of the observatory, on his return after several years' service in the Middle East, and expressed the pleasure of the committee in having back again in their midst such an ardent and enthusiastic astronomer. It was decided to commence the 1946 session of public nights at the observatory on Saturday, May 4, and to continue every fine Saturday thereafter until the end of September, as usual. It was hoped to arrange for some lectures during the winter months, and plans were discussed for instructional classes among groups of secondary school pupils and others interested in the study of astronomy. Mr Couling reported having received an estimate for repairs and improvements to the observatory. It was decided to proceed as soon as possible with some necessary work on the exterior of the building which would render it more weatherproof and also provide protection from the depredations of vandals.

Plans were also in mind for lining the interior walls and these together with other recommendations for enhancing the interest of those using, the observatory would be placed l before the next annual general meeting of members in October.
