SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
(Prom Our Correspondent.) REFEREES* ASSOCIATION. South Otago referees met on Saturday _ night to discuss matters for the coming season. The secretary (Mr C. Clark) presented the balance sheet, showing a small credit, and this was adopted. Mr Clark was reappointed secretary. It was decided where practicable to appoint neutral referees and Messrs I. Stewart, C, Clark, and J. McNoe were appointed an appointment committee. It was also decided to arrange for Mr Ira Grant to visit Balclutha for a week-end and" give referees a talk on rules. After the meeting those present had an interesting discussion on rules generally. It is hoped to have the South Otago Referees' Association in full operation before this season progresses very far. R.S.A. APPEAL. The appeal being made by Clutha District It. S. A. for funds to improve the Band Hall recently purchased by the association proved most successful, and up to Friday night approximately £2,500 was in hand, this being obtained by way of donations, concert parties and the big carnival. It was unfortunate that the weather on Saturday prevented the big gala day from being held, its cancellation causing much disappointment throughout town and district. It is quite safe to say that had the function been held under favourable conditions a large amount would have been added to the funds. However, the dance at night was well patronised, and the concert by the " Black Crows " and "One.for All" non-stop revue on Monday night promises to bring in a goodly sum, as the theatre is booked out. The citizens' committee which organised the carnival is very -pleased with the results and is to be congratulated on the success attending its efforts. MILTON FIRE BOARD. At the annual meeting of the Milton Fire Board last week Mr C. Keinan was re-elected chairman for a further term. Notification was received of the appointment of Mr A. W. Sinclair to the board in place of Mr Mercer, and he was welcomed by the chairman. The estimates for the current year were submitted by the secretary and are to> be forwarded to Wellington, for approval. The superintendent reported that during the year only four calls were received, the most serious being to a motor car which took fire in Union street. The brigade had been very successful at the Southern Districts' and Watts Cup competitions and gained several prizes. Service honours awarded during the year were: Two-year silver bar, A. Wilson, J. Hand. R. Cox, 0. Holmes • fiveyear medals, F. Cheyne, E. Currie, A. McGregor; three-year certificate, G. Read, W. Carruthers. CRICKET. An enjoyable match was played between Lovell's Flat and the Balclutha Railway team at Balclutha during the week-end, the result being a win for the home team by 37 runs. The visitors batted first and made 80, T. Anderson scoring well for 48, including three sixes. The only other batsman to reach double-figures was W. Matson (15). Bowling for Railway T. Delargy (two for eight) and J. Blair (two for 12) were the most successful. Balclutha replied with 117, the best batsmen being A. Ramage 29, R. Blair 15 retired, N. O'Leary 14 retired, F. Hare 14 not out, E. Weavers 11. Booth two for 15, was the Flat's best bowler.
