MORNINGTON AMENITIES

RATEPAYERS* MEETING TRANSPORT PROVISION INADEQUATE Moving the adoption of the sixth annual report at last night’s meeting of the Mornington Ratepayers’ and Householders’ Association, the president, Mr A. S. Cayzer, who, was in the chair, expressed the general dissatisfaction of the association with the transport system as it affected the Mornington district. Generally, in Dunedin, he said, the system was out of date, and in the Mornington area it was practically non-existent, merely touching the fringe. Air Cayzer urged that before a poll was taken regarding the new transport system there should be a general publication of tbe proposed routes and time-tables, and ho suggested that the association should press the council for such action. _ It seemed that something was lacking when buses were sent to Fairfield, which was in the Green Island district, when such a shortage of transport existed in the Alornington district. Referring to roads and footpaths, Afr Cayzer said that some were in a shocking state, mainly owing to a lack of planning, and not to any lack of interest on the part of the council. The ratepayers could not blame the council for its inactivity, as it was faced with a general shortage of labour. This, however, should be in the near future. Reserves in Mornington were in a bad state, owing to the grass being allowed to get out of hand, as no attempt was made to keep it in prder. As playing areas, the reserves were useless. Financially, the President added, th® association was in a very sound position, mainly due to the increased membership, which now stood at nearly 700, a figure which represented about one in erery three householders. Office-bearers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Afr AI. K. Haig; vice-president, Mr J. S. D. More; secretary, Mr F. J. Webb; committee—Airs C. S. AfacArihur, Alessrs A. W. Torrence, ,1. T. Ramsay, C. F. Watson, A. Walker, E. Sincock, P. T. .Jack, G. H. Ferens. and X. B. Thomson. The new office of patron was filled by the ejection of Afr Cayzer, the outgoing president.
