HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The Otago Hospital Board met last night, Dr D. G. McMillan presiding Those present were Mesdames Walter Ross, D. G. McMillan, Messrs A. Steel. J. W. Dove. R. Walls, M.P., P. G. Connolly, M.P., A. A. (Reid, J. (Bennetts, and Dr M. (Blain. A deputation from the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society waited on the board to ask for an increased donation towards the cost of running the James Powell Convalescent Home. Mr C. J Wood explained that during the; last four years there had been a deficit of £3.120 in the running expenses of the home, which was fulfilling a useful purpose in caring' for women who might otherwise be a charge on the Hospital. Between 160-170 women were accommodated at the home every year. Funds were required to avoid the necessity of closing down the home.—The appeal was referred to the Budgeting Committee. The Director-General of Health (Dr M. H. Watt) advised that the Minister had approved of the appointment of Dr A. J.. Alldred as orthopaedic surgical officer. The superintendent of the Hospital, Dr James Thomson, reported that 1.061 patients were treated during January, 441 remaining in the.institution on January 31. A total of 620 has been discharged or had died during the period.
