CITY AMENITIES
SOCIETY'S VARIED ACTIVITIES MEETING OF COMMITTEE Mr George Simpson presided over the monthly meeting of the Dunediii Amenities Society, held yesterday, others present being Mrs H. L. Cook, Messrs D. <Tannoek,. G. S. Kirby, E. S. Green, D. T. Martin, J. McGeorge, John Wilson, Dv Charles Begg, W. J. Birrell, H. P. Kidson, A. L. Salmond, A. C. Cameron, and Dr A. M. Douglas. The Chairman welcomed back from overseas the society's honorary architect, Mr A. L, Salmond. « In reply to the society's request that the question of access to the water department reserves should be reconsidered, a letter was received from the City Council stating that the whole subject had been discussed at a special meeting o£ the council's Water Committee, and later by the council. Extracts from various reports were enclosed, and also a copy of the letter from the District Officer of Health, all of which had a bearing upon the council's decision.—After a discussion it was agreed that the council be warmly thanked for the comprehensive manner in which the position had been investigated, and for its courtesy in supplying this material to the Amenities Society. It was agreed not to press further for access to the water department reserves.
A letter was received from the Anderson's Bay Ratepayers and Householders' Association asking if the society could do anything to improve the approaches to the Anderson's Bay Cemetery along the Tomahawk road and Tahuna road. The letter stated, inter alia, that the Tahuna road was nothing but a wilderness of sand and lupines, and help would be greatly appreciated. A sub-committee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs John Wilson and R. Fountain, was appointed to meet representatives of the Anderson's Bay Ratepayers and Householders' Association to discuss the matter on the spot. The Hon. Secretary said he felt that the time had arrived when something should be done to beautify .Bathgate Park, which was named after the founder of the Dunedin Amenities Society. At the present time there was nothing to relieve the drabness of the north and south sides of the park, and he thought that trees which would not keep out the sun could be planted at intervals along the sides.—Mr Cameron was supported by Mr D. T. Martin, and it was decided that the committee of the sooiety visit the park in the near future. N The Honorary Secretary reported that the Dunedin Boy Scouts and Cubs, would hold a field day on February 23 (subject to the present restrictions being lifted). The Scouts would clear up a portion of the Town Belt, and the Cubs would plant bulbs in a suitable locality. He appealed to members of the committee to make known the fact that hyacinth, narcissi, daffodil, and bluebell bulbs were required. Arrangements were made to hold the annual meeting on Thursday evening, March 28, the speaker to be Mr J. P. Hudson, George Medal and bar, M.8.E., B.Sc. The Secretary reported the receipt of the sum of £SO under the will of the late Mr Pierce Herbert Power. Correspondence was received from the town clerk in connection with various matters raised at previous meetings.—This was noted. It was agreed to examine the reserve at the Castle street loop at an early | date, and it was suggested that some of the members of the University Council should be invited to be present. Mr D. T. Martin gave a progress report from the sub-committee dealing with the approaches to the Taieri aerodrome. At the request of Dr Begg, it was agreed to visit the small reserve at | the foot of Cairnhill street at an early I date.
