WATERSIDE WORKERS
PORT ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES MUCH TO BE DESIRED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 12. Accommodation facilities for waterside workers at New Zealand porte were discussed at a conference at Wellington this week of representatives of the Harbour Board's Association, the Waterfront Control Commission, Marine Department Waterside Workers' Union, and shipping interests.
The chairman of the AVaterfront Control Commission, Capt. R. E. Price, said that waiting rooms at many of the ports were inadequate in size, and the type of convenience was of poor standard, while there was also insufficient locker accommodation. Auckland was one of these ports. Canteen facilities also came up for discussion. The conference agreed, that amenities at many ports left much to be desired. It was agreed that Wellington' had gone farther thau most of them in supplying the necessary amenities, but even at that port there was room for improvement in some respects. The conference appointed a committee to go into the question of the apportionment of the cost of providing the amenities required. The committee would meet some time this month. In the interim urgent minor repairs were to be carried out. The programme was to consider immediate needs and a long-term plan.
